Description
FRARI BASILICA
Basilica dei Frari is one of the largest and most important churches in Venice. Located in the San Polo district and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is also one of the most famous churches in the city thanks to its extraordinary artworks and the tombs of important figures.
Its history begins in the 13th century, when the Franciscan friars obtained the land to build a church. The original structure was smaller, but as it became insufficient, it was rebuilt on a much larger scale. Construction lasted for more than a century, and the current building was completed around the 15th century.
The style is Venetian Gothic: the exterior is relatively simple (brick, without excessive decoration), while the interior is विशाल and richly decorated. The layout is a Latin cross with three naves and a very high interior.
The most important feature is its artwork: the basilica houses world-famous masterpieces, especially by Titian (such as the Assumption on the main altar), as well as works by Giovanni Bellini and other major artists.
It also functions as a sort of Venetian “pantheon,” as many important figures are buried here, including Titian himself, the composer Claudio Monteverdi, and Antonio Canova, whose funerary monument is inside.
A particularly interesting detail is that the original choir of the friars is still preserved in its original position, which is quite rare today.
Today, it is both an active church and a major historical and artistic site, visited by large numbers of people.
