Description

St Mark’s Basilica is the spiritual and artistic heart of Venice, located in St Mark’s Square. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries to house the relics of St Mark the Evangelist, it is a masterpiece of architecture blending Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles.

Its richly decorated façade features golden mosaics, sculptures, and columns sourced from around the world—a symbol of the power and commercial openness of the Venetian Republic. Inside, the mosaic floors, golden altars, and the famous Pala d’Oro, a golden altarpiece adorned with precious stones, offer a unique experience of sacred art.

Over the centuries, the basilica has served not only as a place of worship but also as a political and cultural symbol, hosting the official ceremonies of the Serenissima.
