Description
Ca’ Dario is one of the most distinctive (and also most “mysterious”) palaces in Venice. It is located on the Grand Canal, in the Dorsoduro area, not far from the Salute.
It was built at the end of the 15th century (around 1478–1487) for Giovanni Dario, an important figure of the Republic, and designed by Pietro Lombardo.
From an aesthetic point of view, it is very elegant: the façade is decorated with colored marble, featuring unusual patterns and shapes. It is one of the most recognizable palaces on the Grand Canal.
At first, it was a private family residence and was also used as a dowry for the owner’s daughter. Later, it remained with the Barbaro family for centuries before being sold and changing hands many times.
However, what it is most famous for is not only its beauty… but its “strange reputation”: it is often called the “cursed palace.” This is because many of its owners or residents experienced serious problems, including financial ruin, illness, or tragic deaths.
Of course, this is not proven, but the story has made the palace even more famous and fascinating.
Over time, it has been restored several times, and today it is still privately owned, occasionally put up for sale at very high prices (millions of euros).
