CAMPO SANTA MARGHERITA
Campo Santa Margherita is one of the largest and liveliest squares in Venice. Located in the Dorsoduro district, it functions as a kind of “central square” for everyday local life.
Its name comes from the nearby Church of Santa Margherita, which is no longer used as a church today and has been repurposed over time.
In the past, the area was closely linked to work and daily activities: it hosted markets, artisan workshops, and confraternities, making it an important hub for Venetian life.
Its current appearance largely dates back to the 19th century, when some canals were filled in for hygienic reasons, creating a wider open space.
Around the square, you can find notable buildings such as the Scuola dei Varoteri (a former guild headquarters of artisans) and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, as well as historic houses and a war memorial.
Today, however, it is best known as one of the main meeting spots in the city—especially popular with students and young people, thanks to its proximity to universities like Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and IUAV University of Venice.
During the day, it is relatively calm, with small markets and everyday activity, while in the evening it becomes very lively, filled with bars, cafés, and people.
