Description

CAMPO SAN POLO

Campo San Polo is one of the largest open spaces in Venice (second only to Piazza San Marco) and takes its name from the nearby Church of San Paolo.

Originally, it was not a proper square: it was used for farming and for keeping animals. Toward the end of the 15th century, it was reorganized and paved, with a well built at the center. From that point on, it became an important urban space used for markets, fairs, and gatherings.

Over time, it gained increasing importance. Some “minor” markets that were previously held in Piazza San Marco were even moved here, although the main commercial hub of the city remained the Rialto area.

At one point, the square also became a place of entertainment: festivals, ball games, and even bull hunts were held here. However, the situation got out of control, and in 1611 all such activities (games and trading) were banned—an event still commemorated by a plaque on the church.

An important historical event also took place here: in 1548, Lorenzino de’ Medici was assassinated.

Today, the square is surrounded by important historic buildings, and in one of the nearby houses Franco Basaglia was born—the psychiatrist who revolutionized the mental health system in Italy.
