Description
BASILICA OF THE REDEEMER (IL REDENTORE)
Basilica del Redentore is located on the island of Giudecca and is one of the most important churches in Venice. It was designed by Andrea Palladio in the 16th century and is considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance architecture.
Its construction is linked to a dramatic event: a devastating plague that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577, causing thousands of deaths. To ask for the end of the epidemic, the Venetian government made a vow—to build a great church dedicated to the Redeemer.
Work began in 1577 and, although Palladio died before its completion, the church was finished a few years later following his design.
From an architectural point of view, the exterior is very elegant and symmetrical, with a white façade inspired by classical temples. The interior, by contrast, is more restrained but highly harmonious, with large spaces and abundant light—typical of Palladio’s style.
The church is still closely linked to an important tradition: every year in July, Venice celebrates the Festa del Redentore, featuring a procession that crosses the water via a temporary bridge of boats, just as it did in the past.
Inside, there are also works by renowned artists such as Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese, making it significant both from a religious and an artistic perspective.
Overall, the church represents both the faith of the Venetian people (linked to the plague) and one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the city.
