Description
CHURCH OF SAN PANTALON
Chiesa di San Pantalon is located in the Dorsoduro district of Venice, near Campo Santa Margherita. From the outside, it does not look particularly impressive—in fact, the façade is unfinished and quite simple.
In reality, it is very ancient: it dates back at least to the 12th century, although it has been rebuilt several times. The current version is mainly from the 17th century, when the church was completely reconstructed and even reoriented to face the square more directly.
The truly extraordinary feature is inside: the ceiling is covered by a gigantic painting called the Martyrdom and Glory of Saint Pantaleon. It is not a fresco but an enormous canvas (about 443 m²), one of the largest in the world.
This work was created by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It depicts the life of the saint with a spectacular effect, as if the ceiling opens up toward the sky.
In addition, the church contains other important artworks, including a painting by Paolo Veronese and works by Antonio Vivarini and other Venetian artists.
The church is dedicated to Saint Pantaleon (known as “Pantalon” in Venetian), a physician and martyr highly venerated in Venice.
Overall, it is a classic example of a place that may seem simple from the outside but hides something truly spectacular inside—especially its ceiling, which is the main attraction.
