Description

The Church of San Simeon Piccolo is located in Venice, in the Santa Croce district, right in front of Santa Lucia railway station, on the opposite side of the Grand Canal. It is one of the first things you see when you arrive in the city.

It is very ancient: its origins date back to the 9th century, but the building we see today is much more recent, as it was completely rebuilt between 1718 and 1738.

The most distinctive feature is its appearance: it has a circular shape (which is rare in Venice) and a large green dome that is immediately noticeable from afar. In front, there is also a staircase with columns that somewhat recalls ancient temples, like the Pantheon.

Inside, it is organized in a “central” layout, with a round and very orderly space, full of columns and classical decorations.

Beneath the church there is also a fairly large crypt, with tombs and underground spaces.

Over time, the church went through various changes: during Napoleon’s period it lost some of its importance and was not always used as the main parish church, but it has remained active nonetheless.

Today it is less famous than other churches, but very recognizable and important, especially because of its location and its unique appearance.
