ACQUA ALTA BOOKSHOP
Libreria Acqua Alta is one of the most unusual places to visit in Venice. It is not a “normal” bookshop, but a highly creative and quirky space filled with books everywhere.
It was opened in the early 2000s by Luigi Frizzo, a well-traveled man who wanted to create something different from the ordinary.
What makes it famous is its unique layout: instead of traditional shelves, books are stored inside gondolas, boats, bathtubs, and other unusual objects. This is not just for aesthetic reasons—it is also practical, since Venice frequently experiences high water (acqua alta), and this helps protect the books.
Inside, it is wonderfully chaotic: stacks of books everywhere, rooms filled to the ceiling, cats wandering freely, and a very artistic atmosphere. It is less organized than a modern bookstore and more like a place to explore.
One of its most iconic features is the “book staircase,” made of old volumes, which you can climb to enjoy a view of the canal behind.
Over time, it has become a major tourist attraction, often considered one of the most beautiful and unusual bookstores in the world.
In short, it is not just a shop—it perfectly reflects the spirit of Venice: a bit chaotic, creative, and always surrounded by water.
