Description

PONTE DELLE GUGLIE

Ponte delle Guglie is a bridge located in the Cannaregio district of Venice, crossing the canal of the same name near the train station. It is quite important because it serves as one of the main routes connecting this area to the city center.

What makes it unique is its decorative “spikes” (guglie) at the corners—the only bridge in Venice with this feature, which is where its name comes from.

Originally, it was not like this: in the late 13th century, it was a simple wooden bridge. In 1580, it was rebuilt in stone because the original structure was no longer safe.

The guglie were added much later, in the 19th century, so the current name only came into use afterward.

Over time, the bridge has been restored several times, and today it is also more accessible thanks to modern additions such as handrails and ramps.

Nowadays, it is a very busy bridge, used by both tourists and locals, especially because it connects a key transit area between the train station, the Ghetto, and the historic center.
