Description

RIALTO BRIDGE

Rialto Bridge is the most famous bridge in Venice and also the oldest one spanning the Grand Canal. It connects the districts of San Marco and San Polo and has always been a central point of the city.

Originally, it was nothing remarkable: in the Middle Ages there was only a floating bridge, later replaced by a wooden one that frequently collapsed, caught fire, or broke due to the constant crowds and activity.

In the 16th century, it was finally decided to build something more durable. Between 1588 and 1591, the current stone bridge was constructed, designed by Antonio da Ponte.

One of its distinctive features is its single large arch, and the fact that it is “inhabited”: there are shops and stalls along the bridge, making it almost like a commercial street suspended over the water.

For centuries, it was the most important commercial point in Venice, thanks to its proximity to the Rialto Market, and it was always full of merchants and activity.

Today, it is one of the main symbols of Venice: always crowded, full of tourists, and offering one of the most beautiful views over the Grand Canal.
