Description

The Porta della Carta is the main entrance to the Doge’s Palace from St. Mark’s Square. It is a highly decorated and very theatrical gateway, essentially designed to impress anyone entering.

It was built in the 15th century (around 1438–1442) in Venetian Gothic style, so it is full of intricate details, statues, and decorations. Above it, you can also see the doge kneeling before the Lion of St. Mark, a symbol of the power of the Republic.

The name is quite curious: it probably comes from the fact that nearby there were people selling documents or writing official acts (“carta”), or because public notices could be posted there.

It was not just a “normal” entrance: it represented a symbolic passage between the square (that is, the people) and the center of Venice’s political power.

Over time, it was damaged and later restored, but today it can still be seen almost as it originally was.

In short, it is one of the most beautiful gates in Venice and a perfect example of how the city sought to display its wealth and importance right from the entrance.
