Description

PUNTA DELLA DOGANA

Punta della Dogana is a very distinctive spot in Venice: a triangular piece of land that separates the Grand Canal from the Giudecca Canal, right in front of Piazza San Marco.

Its name comes from the Dogana da Mar, the historic customs house where all goods arriving in the city by sea were once inspected. It was an extremely strategic location, as nearly all maritime trade passed through this point.

The building we see today dates back to the late 17th century. It is easily recognizable thanks to its triangular shape and the tower topped with a large golden sphere supported by statues—symbols of Venice’s power and wealth.

For centuries, it served a practical function related to trade and customs control, making it essential to the economic strength of the Venetian Republic.

Later, it lost its original purpose and remained unused for some time. In the 2000s, it was completely restored and transformed into a contemporary art space connected to the Pinault Collection.

Today, it is both a historic site and a modern museum, as well as one of the most beautiful panoramic points in Venice, offering stunning views over the San Marco area, the lagoon, and the Grand Canal.
