Description
CLOCK TOWER
Clock Tower is located in Piazza San Marco and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Venice. It stands above the entrance to the Mercerie, the street that connects the square to the main commercial areas.
It was built at the end of the 15th century (around 1496–1499), when Venice wanted a more modern and impressive public clock than the previous one. It was meant as a demonstration of the city’s power and technological advancement.
The most famous feature is, of course, the clock itself: it is not just a timepiece, but an astronomical clock, showing the zodiac signs, the phases of the moon, and the movement of the sun.
At the top of the tower are two bronze statues known as the “Moors,” which strike the bell every hour. They are among the most iconic symbols of Venice.
The tower also includes a special mechanism that, on certain occasions, makes figures such as the Three Wise Men appear and move in front of the statue of the Madonna—an impressive kind of “automated show” for its time.
Beyond its beauty, the tower had an important function: it marked time for the entire city and stood in a strategic position between the political center (San Marco) and the commercial district.
Today, it remains one of Venice’s main symbols—seen by everyone passing through Piazza San Marco, even if few realize how technologically advanced it was for its time.
